Experience of War (Home and Away)
Unlike war today, which we hear about on the news, on the Internet and in documentaries, war in the 1910s was not known to Australians. Australia had been involved in the Boer War from 1899-1902, but that was all the way over in South Africa. Nothing would prepare the soldiers for the type of war they would experience at Gallipoli or in France. At home, people found out about the war from the soldiers who had a lot of time to write home. Some wrote memoirs, others letters, and others expressed themselves in poetry.
This unit will explore WW1 Poetry and what these poems tell us about the experience of war. We will look at what types of poems they wrote (including the techniques they used), what they were trying to express about their experience and how people back at home may have experienced these poems.
