Treaty of Versailles
After the fighting had stopped, the winners (France, England and America primarily) had to determine what the consequences were for the losers at the Paris Peace Conference (Jan-June 1919). Germany and Russia were not allowed to be a part of the negotiations (why?).
A part of the negotiations were to get the losers to pay for the war (similar to when you take someone to court in a civil case) and to restrict their power so they could not wage another war.
However, as you can see in the linked image below, this was not a successful strategy.
Assessment:
Using the image on the left and the other resources on this page, memorise answers to the following questions:
- What is the Treaty of Versailles, why and when was it produced?
- What was the impact of the Treaty of Versailles (TOV) on Germany?
- Was the treaty successful? Why or why not? Be specific and use examples.
Despite there being a number of causes that contributed to the outbreak of war, part of the Treaty of Versailles that was signed forced Germany to accept all the blame for the war. Germany was impacted the most, and to remember what happened to them, you can use the acronym B.R.A.T
